THE FOUNDATION ROOM presents a new series of rust paintings by Luke Rothschild. This exhibition presents Rothschild’s new body of work generated by rusting oxidizing metal onto canvas, panel, and paper. Singular and iconic imagery is the resonant testimonial to the contact point between decomposing iron, and the pristine white ground that it was resting on. Minimal paint is applied to provide a counterpoint to the organic nature of the rust.

According to Rothschild, “Sometimes the most beautiful and exciting imagery is generated arbitrarily by the process of decay… My aim with my paintings is to try and capture the poetry of oxidization and residue; to nurture and guide the process of decay, and coerce this organic form of decomposition into a cohesive language of forms and images.”

In 1992 Rothschild graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and began actively pursuing a career in music. In October 2002 he moved to Venice California where he founded the performance group String Theory , who has performed at MOCA LA, The Getty Museum, The 2006 Grammy Awards Celebration and many other artistic institutions in the past few years. He has been incorporating his music into sonic sculpture and architectural long-string installations. His works have been shown in numerous galleries and art fairs, including the 2006 Los Angeles Art Show, and Pharmaka Art in Los Angeles.

Rothschild is a member of the Pharmaka Group, a group of artists who meet bi-weekly to discuss paintings relevance in today’s society, and who also operate a non-profit art space in downtown Los Angeles Gallery Row called Pharmaka Art, which is dedicated to the exploration of contemporary painting.
